What Is the Victorian Era?

The Victorian era (1837–1901) was a period when the United Kingdom flourished in prosperity, culture, industry, and the arts. Under the reign of Queen Victoria, the nation expanded its imperial territories and experienced social transformation driven by the Industrial Revolution. With the rise of the middle class, lifestyles and values evolved significantly. Architecture and furniture blended various styles such as Gothic and Rococo, resulting in ornate and elaborate designs. In literature, figures like Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle emerged, capturing the imagination of the public. At BAM Kamakura, visitors can experience the aesthetics and spirit of the Victorian age through a curated collection of antiques representing this iconic period.

- Victorian Antiques -

At BAM Kamakura, visitors can explore a wide array of antiques that symbolize the Victorian era. Royal warrant pianos and massive phonographs speak of the rich musical culture of the time. Snuff mull boxes—once popular among gentlemen—reflect the traditional aesthetics of Scotland. The world’s first postage stamp, the “Penny Black,” and commemorative coins minted during Queen Victoria’s reign also provide insight into the social systems and imperial glory of the era. These objects offer a vivid glimpse into the elegance and depth of Victorian life.

- Antique Furniture -

Victorian furniture is characterized by its revival and blend of diverse stylistic traditions. Exhibits include refined “settees,” dual-purpose decorative and storage pieces like “chiffoniers,” gracefully curved “kidney tables,” and practical foldable “Sutherland tables.” Gothic Revival, Rococo, and other styles merged during this era, enriching living spaces with grandeur and elegance. Fireplaces and mahogany cabinets further enhanced interior sophistication. These furnishings served not only practical purposes but also stood as cultural artifacts symbolizing beauty and prestige.

– Miniature Houses –

The Victorian Room features special miniature houses inspired by classic British picture books. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind creation meticulously crafted by artisans for BAM, built atop the original first editions of the stories they represent. These works recreate enchanting scenes from Sherlock Holmes, Peter Rabbit, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins, Paddington, Winnie-the-Pooh, and more—inviting visitors into the world of each tale. As a unique exhibition alongside antiques, these pieces offer a new charm where literature and craftsmanship come together.
